  1. ADSL

    Acronym for : Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. A method of transferring data over regular phone lines using the same copper wires a regular phone lines uses. Download speeds are much faster than upload speeds, hence the "Asymmetric" inclusion. See also SDSL

  2. AFK

    Abbreviation for : Away From Keyboard. Commonly used in chat rooms.

  3. AI

    Acronym for : Artificial Intelligence. The notion that computer software programs can take on an intelligence in their own right. Software is fundamentally a series of if/else commands ... if something is true, do this, else do that. Should software be able "think" for itself, it would posses Artificial Intelligence.

  4. Alphanumeric

    A string of text that contains or may contain both alphabetical characters and numeric digits.

  5. ANSI

    Acronym for : American National Standards Institute. A private, non-profit organization that administers the U.S. voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system.

  6. Apache

    Apache is probably the world's most popular open-source webserver. An extremely powerful, robust and stable HTTP server with CGI, SSL, and other more advanced features available through optional add-in modules.

  7. Append

    Programming. To add a string or statement to another. To place a word, paragraph or records after an existing set of records. When writing to files, to add the new data to the end of the existing data set. Antonym : Prepend

  8. Applet

    A small Java application capable of being embeded into a regular HTML page. Java applets differ from applications which can stand alone and function without a browser. Java is completely disparate from JavaScript.

  9. ASCII

    Acronym for : American Standard Code for Information Interchange and is a standard seven-bit code that was proposed by ANSI in 1963, and finalized in 1968. The code represents English characters found on the keyboard as numbers. See this page for more information.

  10. ASCII Art

    The creative arrangement of regular text characters forming images. A simple example would be a smiley :-) More intricate designs form images of just about any object.

  11. ASP

    Acronym for : Active Server Pages. A server side programming language developed by Microsoft.
